HARRISONBURG, VA. – Kris Thorton hauled in four touchdown catches, leading No. 3 James Madison over visiting Campbell 51-14 at Bridgeforth Stadium on Saturday.
JMU moved to 8-1 on the season with its fourth straight win, while Campbell fell to 3-6 overall.
Thorton's 31-yard TD catch, his third of the day, with 3:36 to go before the break helped the Dukes lead it 27-7 at half. After adding a TD catch with 2:15 remaining in the game, Thorton finished with eight catches for 142 yards.
Cole Johnson completed 11-of-21 passes for 259 yards and four touchdowns, adding 32 yards rushing with another TD on the ground. Antwane Wells, Jr. added three catches for 74 yards and a score, while Latrele Palmer rushed for 86 yards on 13 carries.
Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey paced the JMU defense with 10 stops, assisting on a tackle for loss, while Bryce Carter was one of four Dukes to force a fumble, also recovering one and making two tackles.
Caleb Snead posted a record-setting performance against the nationally-ranked Dukes, collecting 11 catches for 198 yards, both CU single game records, with two touchdowns. The wide out notched a 67-yard TD catch in the first quarter to tie the game, and added a second score in the third.
Snead also set the CU single season catches record, now with 63, and is now tied for the program's single season receiving TDs mark with 10.
Hajj-Malik Williams completed 19-of-33 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns, also rushing for 39 yards.
Dontae Crow also made four catches for 45 yards.
CJ Tillman recorded a game-high 11 tackles, while
Gabe Holmes and
Brevin Allen each notched a sack, combining for eight total tackles.
JMU registered 476 yards of total offense, scoring on eight of its first nine possessions.
The game marked Campbell's seventh against a ranked FCS opponent all time, and third against a top-5 foe.
The Camels will return to Barker-Lane Stadium for their 2021 home finale on November 13, hosting Hampton. CU will close out the season at Big South newcomer Robert Morris on November 20.
