Henderson leads Camels by Upstate 64-49

CU extends win streak to four games

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Cedric Henderson, Jr. scored 22 points to lead Campbell to a 64-49 win over USC Upstate Friday at Gore Arena.

Jordan Whitfield added 15 points plus a career-high eight rebounds and Messiah Thompson 10 points for the Camels (12-9, 8-6 Big South), who pulled away with a 16-2 run late in the contest.

Campbell shot 53 percent from the floor (26-49), 57 percent (12-21) in the second half, and finished with a 34-26 edge on the boards.

With Henderson on the bench with three fouls, Upstate (4-15, 4-9) went on an 11-2 flurry over a 4:50 span to draw within two (47-45) on Jatayveous Watson's dunk with 11:24 to play.

Henderson, however, returned after the under-12 media timeout and promptly drove to the basket for the first two of his 12 points in the decisive run.  He was on the end of a pair of Thompson drives and dishes that extended the margin to double figures and the Spartans never drew closer down the stretch.

Upstate shot 38 percent (19-50) on the night and lost its sixth game in the last seven outings.  Dalvin White and Tommy Bruner scored 12 each to lead the Spartans, who made just 5-of-21 from 3-point range.

Campbell rode a 15-2 run midway through the opening half and led by as many as 17 in the opening period.

CU shot 50 percent from the floor and committed just two turnovers (one on a shot clock violation) while taking a 37-22 lead at the break.  Thompson came off the bench to score eight first-half points, while Whitfield and Henderson added seven each.

Now tied for fourth place in the Big South standings, the Camels return to action next Thursday-Friday (Feb. 18-19) in a two-game set at Hampton.
