No. 20 Camels blank Shaw in season opener

Camels extend home unbeaten streak to 15 matches

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sami Charaf Amal set up both goals in his collegiate debut and Campbell defeated Shaw 2-0 in its men's soccer season opener Monday night at the Eakes Complex.

Jalen James and Franck Momo scored first-half goals for the Camels, who are ranked No. 20 in the College Soccer News poll.  Samuel Lechuga recorded his 17th career shutout to move into third place on the CU all-time list and the Camels (1-0-0) did not allow a shot on target against the Bears (0-1-1).

Campbell went in front just over five minutes into the match when Amal set up James for a left-footed shot at the top of the area.  Less than 15 minutes later, the former Moroccan U-18 standout split the Bear back line to free up Momo on an overlapping run and the right back beat Shaw keeper Juan Ramirez for his first career goal.

Campbell out-shot the Bears 23-3, 13-0 in shots on target, and took six corner kicks to one for the visitors.  Ramirez finished with 11 saves in the Shaw nets.

Only Lechuga and center back Bissafi Dotte played the full 90 minutes for the Camels, who employed eight field substitutes, all of whom played at least 21 minutes.

Campbell, which extended its home field unbeaten streak to 15 matches (13-0-2), begins defense of its Big South Conference title next Monday (Feb. 22) when it hosts Winthrop at 6 p.m.
