No. 20 Camels roll by Winthrop 6-0

James scores twice; CU extends unbeaten home streak to 16 matches

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jalen James scored twice to lead Campbell to a 6-0 win over Winthrop Monday at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Matt Lock, Franck Momo, Tyler Young and Alemu Mercer-Miko also scored for the 20th-ranked Camels (2-0, 1-0 Big South) who claimed their second-straight shutout victory.

Winthrop (0-2, 0-1) went more than 76 minutes without a shot against the two-time defending league champs.

Samuel Lechuga notched his second shutout in the nets, his 18th in 41 career appearances for the Camels, who extended their unbeaten streak at home to 16 matches (14-0-2).

Momo swung in a hard cross from the right wing that Lock nodded home in the 19th minute for his first goal of the season.

Eagle keeper Sam Jones left his feet to deflect Jake Morris' 35th minute shot from outside the area by the right post to keep the Camel lead at 1-0.

Momo doubled the Camel lead in the 53rd minute from the penalty spot after James was fouled in the area.  Just over four minutes later, James launched a right-footed shot off Jake Morris' feed to push the lead to three.

Sami Charaf Amal collected his third assist of the year when he fed James for a left-footed effort than caromed off the crossbar and in from the top of the area. The strike was the third in two matches for the junior from Grand Prairie, Texas.

Red-shirt freshman Tyler Young entered the match in the 75th minute and just 49 seconds later scored his first career goal on his first career shot after Eren Elbustu slid a pass into his path at the top of box.  Alemu Mercer-Miko rounded out the scoring in the 84th minute when he met a failed clearance off a corner kick with a right-footed attempt that curled into the side netting just inside the left post.

Campbell finished with a 19-2 advantage in shots, 9-1 in attempts on target.  Lechuga made one save, while Jones made three stops.  The Camels took 14 corner kicks to just two for the visitors.

Campbell returns to action Sunday in a 2:00 p.m. kick-off at USC Upstate.
