Camels drop opener to Liberty 4-1

Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell bats were stifled for most of the evening as the Camels dropped the season opener 4-1 to Liberty. Campbell threatened a few times during the game, but were ultimately plagued by strikeouts throughout the night.

After a scoreless first inning, Campbell (0-1) struck first in the bottom of the second. After back-to-back doubles put runners on second and third, Matthew Christian lifted a flyball to deep left to plate Spencer Packard and take a 1-0 lead. That was it for the Camels in the frame as two straight strikeouts left Connor Denning standing on third.

Liberty (1-0) got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by Brandon Rohrer. The next batter rolled one slowly up the third base line and forced Waldy Arias to hurry a throw that ultimately got by Packard at first. The throw bounced out of play and pushed another run across and give Liberty a 2-1 lead, one they would not relinquish.

Campbell's next best scoring chance came the following inning. After a double steal by Marcus Skundrich and Arias put two in scoring position with just one out and the top of the order due up, back-to-back strikeouts again stranded the pair.

Liberty tacked on two more in the seventh on a two-run shot to right off the bat of Will Wagner. The three-run cushion was plenty for the duo of David Erickson and Fraser Ellard out of the Liberty bullpen, as they held Campbell to just three hits and no runs across six innings of work.

Overall, the Camels struck out 13 times on the night and worked just two walks.

The Campbell pitching staff of Cowan, Heintzman and Beymer allowed six hits and struck out five on the night. Beymer made his Campbell debut tossing the last two innings and striking out four.

Erickson earned the win for Liberty while Ellard picked up the save. Cam Cowan was tagged with the loss.

These teams meet again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. as Campbell looks to get into the win column behind projected starter Ryan Chasse. That game will also be available on ESPN+.
