BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Jessica Donald scored three goals and set up another Sunday to lead Campbell to a 5-0 win over USC Upstate at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Elyssa Nowowieski and
Olivia Neal had two assists each, and
Cameron Turner added a goal for the Camels (2-3, 2-2 Big South), who out-shot the Spartans 37-3.
"I am very proud of our players. Before looking at the win we are looking at the details, the amount of opportunities (realistic) that we are creating, where we possess and where we are willing to let our opponents possess," head coach
Samar Azem said. "Within those areas I thought we did an outstanding job today."
Freshman
Stephanie Martelli made two saves in goal to record her first career shutout for the Camels, who had 15 shots on target and took 10 corner kicks while allowing none for the visitors.
A junior from Tully, N.Y., Donald put the Camels in front in the 17th minute when she finished an attack set up by Neal and Nowowieski.
Just over 13 minutes later, Donald and
Laney Peabody provided the passes that lead to Turner's second goal of the season.
Donald then notched her second goal of the game and season when she tucked the ball by charging Upstate keeper Cora Brendle after receiving a pass from Nowowieski.
Just 8:44 into the second period, Campbell tacked on another score when Neal sent a cross into the Upstate area that a defender accidentally redirected into her own goal.
Neal again played provider less than two minutes later when Donald secured her first career hat trick.
"We have been creating goal scoring chances over and over in these matches. We've been controlling the tempo of the games and today I thought we did a great job of piecing it together. We do have a lot to continue to work on, we are proud the team, and I know they're excited but we have a lot of matches left and each time we step on the field we want to get stronger and better so we will get back to it tomorrow morning."
Campbell continues a 3-match home stand Wednesday when the Camels host Longwood at 7 p.m.
