ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Campbell dropped its first series of the season at UNC Asheville after a 4-2 loss Sunday afternoon. The Camel bullpen tossed 6.2 scoreless innings, but the offense could not overcome the early deficit.
After the loss, Campbell falls to 10-7, 5-4 and Asheville improves to 4-11, 3-7 in conference play.
Asheville struck first and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs got one in the first on an RBI single before adding three in the second. The big inning was fueled by three hits and three walks. Campbell starter
Jonathan Beymer was charged with all four runs.
Chandler Williford came in to get the last two outs of the second inning and allowed one of his two inherited runners to score.
The Asheville bats went quiet after Campbell handed the ball over to
Kevin Westlake. The lefty was lights out for four innings and finished with a line of 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, and 6 Ks and retired the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings.
While Westlake was putting zeros on the board,
Spencer Packard worked to bring the Camels back with a solo shot in the sixth. His fourth of the year and second of the weekend cut the lead to 4-1.
Packard stayed hot and drove in another with an RBI single in the eighth. Packard has now driven in runs in five straight games, including multiple RBIs in each game this weekend. Despite two more hits and a pair on, Campbell couldn't draw any closer in the inning after back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
With nothing doing in the ninth, Campbell fell 4-2.
Jonathan Beymer was tagged with the loss for the Camels. Kole Harris earned the win for UNC Asheville.
The Camels return to action Tuesday at High Point. Coverage information about that game will be available soon.
