Box Score BUIES CREEK, NC – Campbell (4-4) was kept hitless through six innings Friday night before ultimately falling 6-2 to Gardner-Webb (2-5). Mason Miller was lights-out for the Runnin' Bulldogs for six innings, before allowing two to score in the seventh in what amounted to the Camels only offense of the night.
Ryan Chasse matched the senior righty nearly pitch for pitch in the early going, allowing just one hit through three innings and facing one batter over the minimum.
The sophomore worked his way into some trouble in the fourth, issuing two walks and a single to load the bases. Another single to left plated a run, but Chasse dialed it in for a strikeout and groundout to end the threat and limit the damage.
The Bulldogs' big inning came in the fifth, using a two singles, a double and a triple to plate three in the frame and push the score to 5-0, which proved to be plenty of cushion for Miller on the mound.
Collin Wolf ended the no-hit bid with a leadoff single to left in the seventh. With the seal finally broken, Packard laced a double to left to put two in scoring position with nobody out. RBIs from
Zach Williams and
Matthew Christian plated two, but Miller managed to escape the inning without allowing another run and preserved a 6-2 lead.
Campbell had something brewing against the Bulldog bullpen in the eighth, again getting two aboard with nobody out, but a strikeout and 6-3 double play quickly smothered the rally and kept the Camels from getting any closer. Gardner-Webb went on to close it out in the ninth for a 6-2 final.
The Camels struck out 15 times on the evening, 13 of them coming to Miller. Campbell pitching combined to strike out 10, eight by Chasse and two from
Logan Heintzman. Despite the eight strikeouts, Chasse was tagged with his first loss of the season.
The series continues with a double-header tomorrow, with the first game set to begin at 2 p.m. Game two is expected to follow 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
