BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Campbell outscored Gardner-Webb 8-3 in the second half, pulling away for a 17-11 Big South road win Saturday at Spangler Stadium.
Three different Camels (5-6, 3-1 Big South) registered hat tricks while
Alex Salim collected 10 saves in the win, improving to 6-0 all-time against the Runnin' Bulldogs (4-7, 1-3 Big South).
Campbell jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but was met by a 5-1 GWU run, including back to back scores from Eilish Gately. CU took a 9-8 lead into the half after a flurry of goals end the opening frame, with both teams combining for 11 scores in the final 10 minutes of game action before the break.
Sparked by a pair from
Laura Will, CU notched the first four goals of the second half to pull away, forcing 13 Gardner-Webb turnovers in the final stanza and tacking on four more goals for the 17-11 victory, moving to 2-0 on the road in Big South play this season.
Lizzie Yurchak posted a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists, while
Ally Heath also scored four times for the Camels.
Julianna Sanchez also recorded a hat trick with three goals, adding an assist and a school single-game record 14 draw controls. Sanchez tallied 10 draw controls in the first half alone, including six consecutive for the Camels, helping CU win 12 of the 17 first half draws. The Annapolis, Md. native has posted double-digit draw controls in five of her 11 games in 2021.
Megan Matthews also logged a goal and two assists, while Will fired in two goals off the bench.
Annie Ryan picked up three ground balls with two caused turnovers for the CU defense in front of Salim's 10 saves.
Gately led the Bulldogs with three goals, adding two ground balls, while Jada Preston tallied two goals and two assists. Jessica Vetter also scored once, with two helpers. Kathleen Mackey also collected 13 saves in goal.
Next up, Campbell will travel to Radford for a nonconference meeting with the Highlanders. The Camels opened Big South play with a
15-5 win over Radford on March 13.
