Camels take series, split doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Boiling Springs, N.C. – Campbell took the series from Gardner-Webb after splitting Saturday's doubleheader. Campbell fell in game one 10-8 but bounced back with a big 10-1 win in the series rubber match.

Following the split, Campbell sits at 18-11, 13-7, good for first place in the Big South. Gardner-Webb moves to 14-16, 13-8 in league play. Campbell is now 10-2 in doubleheader games this season.

Zach Neto had a monster day for the Camels going 5-6 at the plate with three doubles, a home run, two HBP and five RBIs. He also earned the win on the mound in game two. Connor Denning also had a good day with four hits, two in each game.

GAME 1 RECAP
Gardner-Webb strung singles together in bunches to overtake an early Campbell lead to even the series with a 10-8 win.

Campbell jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a Neto two-run home run and extended that lead to 6-0 on a grand slam from Collin Wolf in the third. That marked Campbell's fourth grand slam of the season, and the second of Wolf's career.

Gardner-Webb evened the score with a five-run fifth that featured five singles and a walk. After two more singles in the sixth, Joe Simone drove in two runs with the Bulldogs' only extra base hit of the game, a triple to left center.

Campbell continued to use big hits to score runs with two more doubles in the seventh to tie the game. But two more singles and two costly Camel errors allowed two more runs to score in the bottom of the frame and put Gardner-Webb up for good at 10-8.

Campbell had nine hits on the day, six for extra bases while Gardner-Webb scattered 13 hits and just the one triple going for extra bases.

Ty Cummings was tagged with the loss for the Camels, tossing 2.1 relief innings allowing four runs, two earned. GWU's Kyle Skidmore picked up the win throwing the final 3.0 innings allowing two runs.

Neto reached five times during game one on three extra base hits and two HBP. The redshirt-freshman also scored three times and drove in three.

GAME 2 RECAP
The Campbell bats were held at bay for five innings, but exploded late in the game to win the rubber match 10-1.

Gardner-Webb starter Kyle Ruehlman held Campbell to just one run on five hits across the first 5.1 innings. But the Camels got to the Bulldog bullpen for the second straight night and tagged five different bullpen arms for at least one run each to break the game open.

After five scoreless innings, Campbell got on the board in the sixth with a Lawson Harrill sac fly to tie the game at 1-1. The next two innings saw the bats really come to life, with a five-run seventh and a four-run eighth.

Unlike the previous two games of the series that featured a lot of home runs and big hits, Campbell strung hits together with 11 for the game, four doubles and no home runs. Of the four doubles, three were ground rule doubles courtesy of the all turf field at John Henry Moss Stadium.

Cade Kuehler started on the bump for the Camels and had the longest outing of his career, tossing 4.1 innings allowing just four hits and one run. He was followed by Neto, who earned the win also tossing the longest outing of his career at 3.2 innings. Gardner-Webb's Isaac Campbell was tagged with the loss.

NEXT UP
Campbell returns to Jim Perry Stadium for a midweek matchup against High Point Tuesday. The Camels will look to avenge a previous midweek loss at High Point on March 23.
