Campbell wins second-straight Big South Sasser Cup

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – After claiming six championship trophies over five sports, Campbell University was presented the George F. "Buddy" Sasser Cup Tuesday night, recognizing the Fighting Camels as the top overall sports program in the Big South Conference for 2020-21.  Campbell won the Big South men's sports trophy for the third season in a row and finished as runner-up in the women's sports trophy standings for the second-consecutive time.

"Our teams had very competitive seasons, highlighted by six conference championships so far, four tournament championships, and dozens of all-conference performers, both academically and athletically," Campbell University Director of Athletics Dr. Omar Banks said. "Although everyone was impacted in various ways by COVID-19, we look forward to our donors, fans and supporters returning to our arenas and stadiums to support our teams, while being a source of pride and engagement for our University and community."

The Camels have won six Big South championships in 2020-21 including four tournament crowns.  Campbell won the regular season title in baseball and softball, while claiming the conference tournament championship in men's golf, women's golf, women's soccer, and softball.  As the top seed in the baseball championship, which will be played Thursday-Saturday at Segra Stadium in Fayetteville, the Camels have already clinched the Sasser Cup and Men's All-Sports trophies.

The Sasser Cup was presented to University President Dr. Brad Creed and Banks during the Big South's spring meetings Tuesday night.

Campbell averaged 9.86 Sasser Cup points through the end of the baseball regular season, and could finish as high as 10.14 with a tournament title.  High Point finished second with a 9.52 average.  Radford was third (7.68) and USC Upstate fourth (7.02-7.21 – depending on how far the Spartans advance in the baseball championship) in the 11-member league.

CU claimed the Big South's automatic berth to NCAA postseason competition in women's soccer, women's golf, men's golf and softball with baseball yet to be determined.  Competing as a member of the Southern Conference, the Camels also won league regular season and tournament wrestling titles and sent a school record seven athletes to the NCAA Championships.

Campbell won the Sasser Cup for the second-straight time while also claiming the honor three-consecutive years from 1992-94.  CU was runner-up in the 2017 and 2018 Sasser Cup standings.  During its 17-year tenure in the Atlantic Sun Conference (1995-2011), Campbell finished as high as third in the combined men's and women's all-sports race.

CU now owns more Sasser Cup trophies – five – than any other current Big South member.

High Point (11.29 points) claimed the 2020-21 Big South women's all-sports title ahead of Campbell (10.13) and Radford (7.22).

Campbell's second-straight all-sports trophy comes on the heels of steady success over the last six seasons.  CU finished third in the 2016 Sasser Cup before placing second in 2017 and 2018.  In the men's sports race, Campbell was third in 2016 and second in 2017 before winning the last three seasons.  The Campbell women finished third in 2016, 2017 and 2018 before rising to second in 2019 and 2021.  The Sasser Cup was not awarded in 2020 after the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
