Radford, VA – The Fighting Camels jumped out to an early lead, and after nearly allowing Radford to come all the way back, pulled away again late to hang on for a 12-6 win to open the series.
Campbell's bats remained hot and blasted three home runs on a night with a steady breeze blowing in from left.
With the win, Campbell moves to 24-14, 19-9 in the Big South while Radford falls to 18-19, 12-15 in league play.
The Camels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a rocket from
Spencer Packard that got by the Highlander first baseman and led to a pair of Campbell runs.
That lead grew to 5-0 adding a one run in each the second, third and fifth innings. One of those courtesy of a
Matthew Christian home run, his team-leading 13
th of the year.
Campbell starter
Cade Kuehler ran into some trouble in the fifth. Kuehler and
Logan Heintzman allowed four runs, two unearned in the inning to make it a one-run game.
Ty Cummings entered in relief with the bases loaded and two outs and needed only one pitch to end the threat inducing a groundout to first base.
Just as they have done all season, the Camels had a big seventh inning. After another seven-run seventh, Campbell is now outscoring its opponents 64-17 in seventh innings this season. This time the inning was fueled by a pair of home runs.
Zach Neto started the scoring with a two-run shot to left and extended his hit streak to 20 games. Later in the frame,
Bryce Arnold lifted his third home run of the year, this time a three-run shot. By the end of the seventh Campbell led 12-4.
Kuehler picked up the win tossing 5.1 innings allowing three runs, two earned on the evening. He's now 5-1 on the year after picking up the win in his last two Friday-night starts. Cummings was sharp and worked 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out three.
Radford's Hunter Williams was tagged with the loss.
Christian and
Bryce Arnold each had three hits on the night to pace the Camel offense while eight different Camels scored a run. Neto was aboard four times as he also worked three walks.
