BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell officially began preparation for the 2021 season Friday, opening preseason training camp at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The team took the field in helmets through a noncontact 5:00 p.m. practice, pushing the session up an hour due to the threat of inclement weather. The Camels went through conditioning, position drills, and went through noncontact 11-on-11 reps.
Friday marked the first of 18 practices for the Camels scheduled throughout the 2021 preseason. Camp will conclude with an open scrimmage on August 28.
The Camels reported back to Buies Creek on Wednesday, one month before opening the 2021 season at FBS-member Liberty on September 4. Campbell will make their home debut on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. against Elon, 665 days since last hosting a football game at Barker-Lane Stadium (vs. No. 15 Monmouth, November 16, 2019).
Campbell defensive back
Darion Slade was named to the Big South's 2021 preseason all-conference team, while quarterback
Hajj-Malik Williams, tight end
Julian Hill, and linebacker
Justice Galloway-Velazquez all picked up honorable mention accolades, and Campbell was picked fifth in the eight-team Big South preseason poll.
Campbell is coming off an abbreviated four-game, all-FBS schedule in the fall of 2020, taking on Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State and Wake Forest. 2021 marks Campbell's 14th season since bringing football back to Buies Creek in 2008. After competing in the fall, CU did not participate in the FCS spring season.
