BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Tyler Young scored and set up another goal to lead Campbell to a 4-1 win over Old Dominion Friday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Daniel Hernandez,
Diego Konincks and
Kemy Amiche also scored for the Camels (3-1-1), who out-shot the Monarchs (1-2-0) by a 19-4 margin.
"I'm really pleased with the group's collective effort to defend first tonight, and really play off second balls. We worked on that all week in practice and it was good to see that come to fruition tonight," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "We wanted to give them nothing from the start, and take the chances we got. That level of commitment has got to stay with this team if we want to go as far as we can."
Leading 2-0 at the break, the Camels added another when Konincks flicked in Young's 69th minute corner kick. Amiche then curled a left-footed shot from just outside the box to provide CU with a 4-goal lead after 74 minutes.
ODU avoided the shutout when Eliot Goldthorp curled a free kick over the wall and just inside
Edu Rodriguez' right post.
Ranked No. 9 in the South Region, Campbell did not allow an ODU shot in the opening half and went in front through Hernandez in the 26th minute.
Moses Mensah swung a cross into the box and Hernandez nodded it home for his third goal of the season.
Young slid the ball to a charging
Jake Morris in the 37th minute, but his point-blank shot was turned away by ODU keeper Djibril Doumbia. Just two minutes later, Young tallied his team-leading fourth strike of the year to double the Camel advantage.
Gerard Broussard split the ODU defense with a pass into the box and Young's right-footed shot beat Doumbia and hit the roof of the net.
Campbell out-shot the visitors 11-0 in the opening period with five of those attempts on target.
The Monarchs did not record a shot until Goldthorp's 51st minute free kick that Rodriguez saved without leaving his feet.
The Camels improved to 19-2-4 in their last 25 matches at the Eakes Complex, including a 2-1-1 mark in the 2021 season. Under Fonder, who is in his seventh season with the program, Campbell is 34-17-5 in Buies Creek.
Campbell returns to action Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at No. 4 North Carolina.
