CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Cameron Fisher scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute and fourth-ranked North Carolina defeated Campbell 1-0 Tuesday night at Dorrance Stadium.
The Tar Heels (4-1-1) mustered only one shot in the first half, but hit the post early in the second, and were finally rewarded with just 8:32 remaining in regulation.
Campbell (3-2-1), which entered the contest tied with UNC for ninth nationally in scoring (2.8 goals per game), was shut out for the first time this season.
"I'm really pleased with our how group is growing," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "I thought we played a fantastic first half. We were dialed in. It's a performance we could look at with frustration because we didn't get the result, but we're a better team in week four than we were in week one."
The Tar Heels entered the match leading the nation in shots per game (24.2), but Campbell limited UNC to just one attempt in the opening half – a fifth-minute 25-yard free kick by Ernest Bawa that sailed well high over the bar.
In the 48th minute, Ernest Bawa dribbled into the Camel box and squared the ball across to Aldair Sanchez, whose shot bounded off the right post.
Edu Rodriguez kept the match scoreless after 67 minutes when he came off his line to save Alex Rose's effort in the box and three Camel defenders kept Tega Ikoba from putting the rebound on goal.
The decisive strike came after a foul near midfield. Riley Thomas sent a diagonal free kick to the top of the area, Fisher touched the ball down and struck a right-footed shot inside the left post.
UNC finished with a 9-0 advantage in shots – 3-0 in attempts on target. The Camels were flagged for a season-high offside violations.
Campbell, which stands 2-4-1 vs. nationally-ranked teams since the start of the 2019 campaign, starts a three-match home stand Saturday at 7:00 p.m. vs. Georgia Southern.
