Game Recap: Volleyball |

Campbell falls to Davidson, C of C

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Camels dropped both legs of the Saturday doubleheader to Davidson and the hosting College of Charleston in TD Arena. Campbell (2-7) fell in a five set thriller to Davidson before losing in four sets to C of C.

The Fighting Camels remain winless away from home this season, having previously been swept at the Trojan Invitational. The Camels are now 0-2 in five-set matches this season including the loss to CSUN in the season opener.

"I was proud of how our team competed all weekend," said head coach Greg Goral. "We battled adversity well and continued to put ourselves in positions to win against some very good competition."

Melody Paige was named to the all-tournament team for the third straight weekend after a huge day for the Camels, hitting an ultra-efficient .595 across the two matches. The junior tabbed a career-high 17 kills with only one error in the first match, and added 13 kills with just one error in the second.

Match One Recap
Campbell took the first set with the largest set win of the day at 25-21. Lailah Green put away six kills in the first set to help the Camels grab the early 1-0 lead.

The next two sets were incredibly tight, with Davidson taking the second set 26-24 before Campbell won the third by the same margin. Davidson held set point in the third, but a kill from Melody Paige evened the score and allowed the defense to step up. A solo block from Lailah Green and a block from Emily Campe and Paige put the set away for the Camels and gave them a 2-1 lead.

The Camels were poised to close it out easily in the fourth leading 17-11. But Davidson put together a 8-2 run coming out of a timeout to even the score at 19-19. With the momentum favoring the Wildcats, they were able to close out the set at 25-22 and force the deciding fifth set.

Campbell was again positioned to put the match away with a triple match-point at 14-11, but Davidson again had the answer. The Wildcats battled back and eventually took the set 20-18. The teams combined for a total of eight match points in the final set.

There were a handful of career-marks sets during the match. In addition to Paige's career high in kills, Green led Campbell with a season-high 21 kills. Claranne Fechter posted a career-high 31 digs to lead all players. Emily Mitter also dished out a career-high 28 assists.

Match Two Recap
Charleston took the first set in commanding fashion, 25-12. The Cougars jumped out to an early 9-1 lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 15 in the opening set.

Campbell kept the second set much closer, but couldn't quite squeak out the win. The Camels worked to tie the set at 21-21 following a kill from Green, but two Cougar kills, an ace and a Campbell error led to a 4-0 burst in favor of C of C to end the set at 25-21.

The Fighting Camels continued to battle and were rewarded this time, taking the third set 25-23. Campbell trailed for most of the set before taking the first lead at 20-19. With the score tied at 22, kills from Green and Paige and an ace from Madee Miner pushed the Camels to the finish to win the set.

Campbell was on the brink of forcing a fifth set for the second time during the day, but couldn't quite close out the fourth and fell 25-23.
