Campbell starts UNCW Landfall Classic with win

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Campbell (3-7) ended its three-match slide and handed UNCG (9-2) just its second loss of the season with a 3-1 win over the Spartans Friday afternoon at the UNCW Landfall Classic. The Camels limited the Spartans to just 48 kills on the day while amassing 62 themselves to earn the four-set victory inside of Hanover Hall on the campus of UNCW.

The Camels used a balanced offensive attack with five different Camels notching 9+ kills on the day with four in double figures. Campbell hit .192 during the match.

Campbell got out to a hot start in the first set and forced a quick Spartan timeout at 8-3. After being in control for most of the set, things started to slip away for the Camels and UNCG drew within a point at 23-22. A timely Spartan service error gave Campbell set point and allowed Lailah Green to end it with her team-high fifth kill of the set.

The Fighting Camels jumped out to another early lead in the second set, this time forcing a timeout at 10-5. UNCG once again clawed their way back into the set and eventually evened the score at 20-20. The teams went back and forth the rest of the extended set until UNCG finally took the set at 28-26.

Things looked bleak for the Camels in the third set, trailing late 22-16, but back-to-back kills from Chloe Cook gave Campbell new life and kickstarted a 9-1 run to help Campbell steal the set 25-23. Within the run, a 6-0 burst evened the score, and three straight kills Cook, Green and Wilson put the set away and gave Campbell a 2-1 advantage.

Campbell finished strong in the fourth set to close out the match. It was another set that was tight most of the way, with Campbell leading by just one at 20-19. But the Camels hit the gas and picked up four kills and a UNCG error to close the match with a 5-0 run. Late kills by Green, Colla, and Melody Paige helped end the match.

Sarah Colla finished with season-high 15 kills to pace the Camels, doing so on .419 hitting. Fifteen kills are her most since notching 16 on Nov. 15, 2019. Cook, Green and Paige all added double-digit kills as well. Both setters, Madee Miner and Emily Mitter, posted assist/dig double-doubles, while Claranne Fechter anchored the defense with 25 digs.

Campbell returns to the court in Hanover Hall tomorrow for a doubleheader. The day starts by facing the host UNCW at 12:30 and concludes against Jacksonville at 3 p.m. The match against UNCW will be available to stream on FloSports.
