Camels sweep UNCW, Jacksonville

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Campbell (5-7) swept day two of the UNCW Landfall Classic with a pair of straight-set wins over UNCW (1-9) and Jacksonville (4-8). Campbell was declared the tournament winner with a perfect 3-0 weekend. The wins gave Campbell a strong finish to the non-conference portion of the schedule, ahead of Big South play beginning next weekend.

Sophomore libero Claranne Fechter was named tournament MVP after averaging 5.80 digs/set on the weekend. Melody Paige and Sarah Colla were each named to the all-tournament team as well. Paige posted 26 kills and a team-high 10 blocks to earn her fourth all-tournament nod of the year. Colla added 25 kills across the three matches while hitting an efficient .392.

Match One Recap
Campbell took the first set of the day 25-20. Neither team gathered much separation throughout early going as the teams remained tied at 18-18, but an important 4-0 run left the Camels some breathing room late in the set. Chloe Cook and Melody Paige both tallied three kills in the opening set.

The Camels pushed their lead to 2-0 with a strong 25-16 second set. Campbell led by as many as nine during the set, coming twice at 20-11 along with the final point of the set. Lailah Green posted five kills during the set.

Campbell completed the sweep by closing out the final set 25-20. A late surge again proved to be the difference. This time with Campbell trailing 19-18, the Camels rattled off a 7-1 run to close the book on the match.

Paige and Sarah Colla led the way with nine kills each while Hailey Wilson and Green added eight apiece. Claranne Fechter posted 8.0 digs/set during the day. Campbell's .226 hitting percentage was the second-best mark of the season.

Match Two Recap
Campbell picked up where it left off and won a convincing opening set over Jacksonville 25-15. The Camels put together a 9-0 run in the middle of the set to extend the lead to 10, where it would ultimately stay. Kate Menz led the way through the first set with three kills for the Camels.

The Camels earned their largest set win of the season with a 25-14 second set. There wasn't a huge run during the set, but rather a steady building of the lead that was capped with the final point on a JU setting error. Lailah Green posted three kills and a solo block during the set.

Campbell wasted no time putting the match away and completing the sweep of the day with a quick 25-18 final set. The Camels surged out to a 7-0 lead and held that margin the rest of the way to coast to the finish.
