CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Fighting Camels (6-7, 1-0) opened Big South play with a straight-set win at Charleston Southern (5-8, 0-1) Friday night at the Buccaneer Fieldhouse.
The Camels were strong on both side of the ball, notching their highest hitting percentage of the season at .259 and held CSU to hitting .075.
Lailah Green paced the attack with nine kills while
Melody Paige and
Chloe Cook added eight each.
Campbell jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a strong first set and a 25-17 win. The Camels were the beneficiaries of 13 Buccaneer errors in the opening set, six service, six attacking and one rotation error. The defense held CSU to hitting just .059 in the first set. Green tallied three aces during the first set, and went on to finish with four, a new career-high for the junior.
The Camels held off a late surge in the second set to hang on for a 25-21 win. Campbell led 24-17 before a 4-0 run from the Bucs forced a Campbell timeout. Green was able to finish the set with a powerful kill off the hands of the CSU libero to push Campbell to the finish line. The Camel attack was able to overcome eight errors in the set while still hitting .250 in the frame.
Campbell wasted no time putting the match away with the largest set win of the night coming in the third set. Campbell hit .400 and held CSU to -.148 in the third set to put the Bucs away 25-15 in the third.
Reigning Big South Libero of the Week
Claranne Fechter set the tone on defense with a match-high 16 digs. Paige, Green and
Sarah Colla all posted three blocks for the Camels.
The Camels retake the court tomorrow in Clinton, S.C. for a match at Presbyterian. The match begins at 2 p.m.
