Camels open Big South play with 3-1 victory

Young, Hernandez and Momo score in win over Radford

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell opened Big South Conference play with a 3-1 win over Radford Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Tyler Young, Daniel Hernandez and Franck Momo scored for the Camels (6-2-1, 1-0-0), who ran their unbeaten streak at home to six matches (5-0-1) and won their third-straight overall.

Yoshiya Okawa scored his third goal of the season for the Highlanders (2-4, 0-1), who dropped their second-straight game.

Campbell finished with a 24-11 edge in shots and could have scored more if not for nine saves by Radford keeper Joseba Incera, plus one cleared off the line by defender Toby Squire.

Ranked third nationally in total goals and eighth in goals per game, the Camels nearly went in front in the 12th minute when Jake Morris' left-footed shot beat Incera but caromed off the right post.

Just seven minutes later, however, the Camels took the lead.  Kemy Amiche played a diagonal pass over the Radford back line that Morris ran on to in stride, then squared a low cross along the six-yard box.  Young's first touch hit the net for his Big South-leading sixth goal of the season.

In the 49th minute Radford drew level through Okawa, who scored on a left-footed shot outside the area.

Only 2:14 later, the Camels went back ahead.  Sami Charaf Amal lofted a pass from near half field that Hernandez controlled at the top of the box, then touched around Incera before slotting home his fifth strike of the year into an empty net.

Camel keeper Edu Rodriguez preserved the lead in the 66th minute with a foot save after Ryan Machado-Jones broke in one-on-one.  Rodriguez finished the night with five stops.

Momo added the final goal from the penalty spot at 76:06 following a handball whistled on Solomon Clark in the area.

Thirteen of Campbell's 24 shots were on target and CU ran its record to 10-0-1 in matches when Young, a red-shirt sophomore, has at least one goal or assist.  Young has at least one point (4G, 4A) in each outing during Campbell's six-game unbeaten home stretch.

Ranked No. 8 in the latest South Region poll, Campbell improved to 5-1-1 at home this season and ran its record at the Eakes Complex to 22-2-4 in their last 28 matches in Buies Creek.

"Radford played extremely hard and made it difficult for us," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder. "I don't think we adjusted that well, to be honest, but to get three points at home is still the goal.  We did it and got the job done.  Our locker room right is a little bit upset by the quality of our play. We've got some things to clean up, but we won and didn't play our best, which is a good sign."

Campbell travels to Elon Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. start before resuming Big South play next Saturday (Oct. 2) at Presbyterian.
