Campbell loses in straight sets to JMU

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – It was another stagnant night for the Camel offense as Campbell (0-4) fell in straight sets to James Madison (4-1) in the home opener as part of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Dunn Campbell Invitational.

The Camels went point for point with the Dukes in the opening set. The largest lead by either side in the set was three, held by JMU at 15-12. Campbell forced the set beyond the 25-point mark, but ultimately fell 27-25. Campbell was led by Lailah Green's three kills in the set.

Chloe Cook got hot in the second, picking up four kills on just eight attacks, but the Camels still hit just .065 as a team. Meanwhile, two Dukes had four kills each in the set, as JMU took a two-set advantage with a 25-19 win.

JMU hit the gas in the third to put the match away, taking the final set with a convincing 25-14 win. JMU's Miette Veldman had a huge set, piling up nine kills in the third alone, compared to just 11 total for the Camels. Veldman posted a match-high 17 kills and JMU hit a blistering .515 in the final set.

Campbell was led by Cook and Melody Paige with seven kills apiece. Madee Miner saw her first extended action of the year and was the team assist leader with 13. Claranne Fechter reached 10 digs to pace the team.

The Camels are back for a doubleheader tomorrow, hosting Alabama State at 11 a.m. and will cap the tournament against NC Central at 6 p.m.
