Camels blank Charlotte 2-0

Duval earns shutout, Baiotto and Richards score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Reagan Baiotto and Jackie Richards scored second-half goals and Campbell defeated Charlotte 2-0 Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Reaghan Duval made three saves to earn her first shutout of the season in the nets for the Camels (2-2-1), who improved to 2-0-1 at home this season.

Campbell finished with a 13-8 edge in shots and dealt the 49ers (3-1) their first setback of the year.

A freshman out of Swansboro High School, Baiotto ran on to a loose ball in the Charlotte half and sent a right-footed blast into the lower right corner for her first career goal to put the Camels ahead in the 52nd minute.

Duval was able to parry Macey Bader's shot off the bar, then gathered in the rebound in the 78th minute to preserve the lead.

Just four minutes later, Emilee Barnett slid a pass down the right flank to Jessica Donald, who dribbled by a Charlotte defender, cut back at the right edge of the area, and fed Richards in the center of the box.  A transfer from Xavier, Richards nailed a left-footed shot just under the bar for her first goal in a Camel uniform.

Charlotte had not allowed a goal and out-shot its first three opponents by a 51-14 margin.  However, Campbell limited the 49ers to just two first-half shots.

Campbell's best chance in the opening period came after 22 minutes when Richards headed Elyssa Nowowieski's serve over the bar.

"I'm so proud of the team. Those two goals were fantastic goals, and we're doing a better job of getting into the attacking third," said Campbell head coach Samar Azem.  "Charlotte's a fantastic team. They gave us a hard time in some areas, but I thought our team dealt well with that."

The defending Big South champs return to action one week from Sunday (Sept. 12) at UNC Greensboro before opening league play Sept. 18 at High Point.
