Ranked among top 5 players in N.C.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Lukas Steffen of Cary, N.C., has signed an athletics grant-in-aid with Campbell University, head men's tennis coach David Johnson announced Friday.  He will join the team for the 2022-23 academic year.

A 6-foot-4 right-handed senior at Green Level High School, Steffen has been ranked among the top five 18-under players in North Carolina and as high as No. 83 nationally by Tennis Recruiting.

In his junior career, Steffen has reached the national clay courts quarterfinals, won the NC qualifier and numerous national L2 and L3 doubles titles.

Steffen comes from a tennis playing family.  His father played collegiately at UAB, while his older sister competes at Villanova.

"We are really pleased to add Lukas to our team for next year," said Johnson, who is in his 24th season in charge of the Camels.  "I was very impressed with him both on and off the court. He is an accomplished player certainly at the state level, but also regionally and nationally. To get such a strong local highly-recruited player is a real plus for us."

Steffen joins a Fighting Camel program that has advanced to five of the last seven Big South Conference championship matches.

The Camels open the 2022 dual match campaign Thursday, Jan. 20 at NC State.
