Camels host Panthers in 1st place battle

Campbell unbeaten in last five matches

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The top two teams in the Big South standings square off Wednesday when Campbell (7-2-3, 3-0-1) hosts High Point (4-3-4, 2-0-2) Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.  The Camels are unbeaten (4-0-1) in their last five outings, while High Point is 2-1-2 over the same span.
 
LAST TIME OUT:  Campbell - Kyoji Hata scored the equalizer late in the first half, then set up second-half goals by Daniel Hernandez and Jalen James (who scored in his fourth-straight game) Saturday in a 3-1 Homecoming win over UNC Asheville... High Point - Holden Trent posted his third shutout of the season Saturday in a 0-0 draw at Presbyterian.
 
HOME, SWEET HOME: The Camels stand 30-2-6 in their last 38 matches at the Eakes Complex, including a 3-0-2 mark in this season.  Under 8th-year Coach Dustin Fonder, Campbell is 45-17-7 in Buies Creek.
 
BIG SOUTH SUCCESS: CU owns a 30-1-5 in its last 36 games (regular season and tournament) vs. Big South foes, including a 24-1-3 mark in regular season play over the last four seasons... Campbell has won 5 BSC trophies over the previous 4 seasons - 2018 tournament, 2019 regular season and tournament, 2021 regular season and tournament.
 
HATA EARNS BIG SOUTH & NATIONAL HONORS:  Kyoji Hata was named Big South offensive player of the week and to national teams of the week by College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer after leading the Camels to a pair of wins.  He had two assists in a 5-1 victory last Wednesday at Longwood, then figured in all three goals - scoring one and setting up two - in Saturday's 3-1 win over UNC Asheville.  Hata is tied for the league assists lead (6 - with teammates Tyler Young and Daniel Hernandez) and T14th nationally.
 
HIGH POINT PREVIEW: Picked second in the Big South preseason poll, the Panthers are 3rd among league teams in scoring (1.45) and goals allowed (1.27). Noah Holmes is T3rd among Big South leaders in scoring (5G, 0A, 10 pts) and Holden Trent is 2nd in goals-against average (1.27) and shutouts (3).  In league play, High Point has defeated Winthrop (4-1) and Radford (5-1) and drawn with Gardner-Webb (1-1) and Presbyterian (1-1)... Zach Haines is in his 4th year as head coach at High Point and has directed his teams to a 22-1-5 record in Big South regular season contests.
 
SERIES HISTORY:  Campbell owns a 14-9-6 lead in the all-time series with the Panthers, which dates to 1972 when both programs were NAIA members... In the eight years since head coach Dustin Fonder moved to Buies Creek from High Point, Campbell stands 5-2-3 against the Panthers, including a 3-2 win in the 2021 Big South final and a 4-1 victor in the 2019 title match... Last season, the Camels and Panthers played to a 0-0 draw at High Point in the regular season before CU won its 3rd league title in 4 years behind goals from Kemy Amiche, Bissafi Dotte and Adrian Morales.

Kyoji Hata, Daniel Hernandez and Tyler Young stands T14th in the country in assists (6), while Jalen James is 19th in total goals (7)... In the Big South, CU leads the league in scoring (2.33) and is 2nd in scoring defense (1.0)... Jalen James tops Big South Conference leaders in points (15) and goals (7), while Daniel Hernandez is 2nd in points (14)... Kyoji Hata, Hernandez and Tyler Young stand 1st in assists (6)... Kemy Amiche is T2nd on the team with 14 points (5G, 4A), but has not played the required 75% of the team's matches to figure in league and national leaders.
 
KEEP AWAY: Campbell has won the possession battle in 10 of its first 12 matches.  CU has taken 86 corner kicks to just 32 for the visitors and has out-shot its foes by a 189-93 margin.
 
YOUNG POINTS = CAMPBELL POINTS:  Campbell stands 17-0-3 all time in matches when 2021 Big South offensive player of the year (and '22 preseason offensive POTW) Tyler Young has at least one point, including a 4-0-2 mark this season.  In addition to scoring the game-winner vs. UIW, he notched a pair of assists at HBU and set up Kemy Amiche's winner vs. No. 12 UNCG.
 
HEAD COACH DUSTIN FONDER (Roanoke, '94) is in his eighth season at Campbell (80-47-15 overall, 40-16-5 Big South).  His overall head coaching record stands at 158-110-33, including a 78-63-18 mark in eight seasons at High Point.  In 2021, Fonder was named Big South Coach of the Year for the 2nd time in 3 seasons and 4th time overall.  He has guided CU to 5 Big South trophies and 3 NCAA apeparances (2018, 2019, 2021) in the last four seasons.  He was also named Big South Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010 while at HPU.
