Camels and UAB play to scoreless draw

Camels 5-1-2 in last 8 outings

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell and UAB played to a scoreless draw in non-conference action Tuesday night at the Eakes Athletics Complex.

Edu Rodriguez made three saves for his third shutout of the season and the Camels (8-3-4) finished with a 12-10 advantage in shots, but neither team was able to score.

Lukas Betz made four saves in his first clean sheet of the year for the Blazers (3-7-3), including a diving stop on Gerard Broussard's 69th minute breakaway.  Betz also was the beneficiary of his woodwork when Campbell's Daniel Herandez hit the right post in the 82nd minute.

"It was a typical midweek non-conference game this time of year," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.  "Neither team has a full squad fit for selection. I thought our guys a good job getting through it. The fortunate thing for us is that we didn't pick any additional injuries.  Of course, we wanted to win, but at the same time we got guys minutes who hadn't played much before and strengthen the squad, hopefully down the stretch."

Campbell nearly jumped in front in the 12th minute when freshman Ethan Roberts, making his first career start, sent a blistering header toward the right side of the goal, but Betz was able to leave his feet to deflect the ball around his post for a corner.

After coming on as a substitute in the 42nd minute, Campbell freshman Ioannis Moros turned in the box and struck a left-footed shot that was headed for the top left corner, but Betz again was able to tip the ball over his cross bar.

Rodriguez kept the game level just after the hour mark with an acrobatic save off Owen Travis' back post header.

NOTES: The Camels stand 30-3-7 in their last 40 matches at the Eakes Complex, including a 3-1-3 mark this season.  Under 8th-year Coach Dustin Fonder, Campbell is 45-18-8 in Buies Creek… Tuesday's match was the first ever between Campbell, which started its men's soccer program in 1963, and UAB, which played its first varsity season in 1979… Campbell returns to action next Tuesday Oct. 25 at UNC Wilmington for a 7 p.m. kickoff in the 55th renewal of the Cape Fear River Derby.
