Camels move to 10-0 with five-set win

BUIES CREEK - Campbell remained unbeaten in conference play with a narrow five-set win over Gardner-Webb Friday night at Gore Arena. Three of the five sets were decided by just two points.

The win takes Campbell to 14-8, 10-0 in league play to continue adding to the program's best start ever to conference play. GWU falls to 5-16, 3-6 in the conference. 

The Camels commanded the opening set with a 25-16 win, hitting .414 in the process. It was close early but Campbell used a 7-1 run in the middle stages to pull away. Chloe Cook paced the Camels in the opening frame with five kills.

Campbell's efficient first set was followed by a second plagued with errors. The Camels committed 12 total errors in the set. Campbell held a late lead at 18-14, but allowed the set to slip away as the Runnin' Bulldogs took it 25-23.

Campbell took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 third set. The Camels gave away an early lead, but retook it as quickly as it disappeared with a late 5-0 run to regain control of the set and cruise to the set win. 

Gardner-Webb forced a deciding fifth set with yet another 25-23 win in the fourth. GWU hit its best mark of the night at .324. Campbell had its chance to put the match away at 21-18, but couldn't close the deal.

Campbell looked to be on the brink of its first conference loss in the fifth set, but managed to pull out a 17-15 win. The Camels trailed 13-9 before closing the match with a furious 8-2 run featuring kills by four different Camels and a big ace from Claranne Fechter to give the Camels the win.

Lailah Green led all players with 16 kills while Chloe Cook added 14. Emily Mitter dished out a season-high 32 assists. Fechter came up with 27 digs and Paige came up with five more blocks.

Campbell returns to action with a pair of road matches next weekend at Winthrop and Presbyterian on Friday and Saturday. Both matches are slated to be streamed on ESPN+.
