Camels drop first conference match at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Campbell's 10-match win streak came to an end with a five-set loss at Winthrop Friday night. The win streak had been Campbell's longest since 1997, and the 10-1 start remains the best start to a conference slate in program history.

The loss drops Campbell to 14-9, 10-1 in the league. Winthrop improves to 13-9, 9-2.

Campbell got off to a hot start with a 25-18 win in the first set. Ananda Patterson paced the efforts in the opening frame with four kills as Campbell hit .314.

The offense was quite in the second and third sets, hitting -.026 in the second set and .056 in the third. Winthrop took advantage and took both sets convincingly, 25-11 in the second and 25-17 in the third.

Campbell was able to force a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth. Four Camels tallied four kills as part of a balanced attack that improved to hitting .260 in the fourth.

The ten-match win streak ultimately ended with a 15-10 loss in the fifth set. Trailing 6-7 in the frame, a four-point run for the Eagles proved to be too much to overcome.

Patterson paced three Camels in double-figure kills with 12, while Paige and Green added 11 and 10, respectively. Patterson did so committing only two errors for a .400 hitting percentage on the night. Emily Mitter dished out 24 assists and Claranne Fechter collected 18 digs.

The Camels will look to get back into the win column tomorrow with a trip to Presbyterian. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
