BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Kemy Amiche scored twice in a one-minute span and Campbell defeated Presbyterian 3-0 Saturday night.
In the final regular season home match for 10 Fighting Camel seniors, Amiche broke a scoreless tie in the 80th minute, then added an insurance strike one minute later to lift the Fighting Camels (9-3-5, 5-1-1) back on top of the Big South table with 16 points entering Wednesday's regular season finale at Gardner-Webb.
Tiago Lopes added his first goal of the year after 82 minutes for the Camels, who secured a home field advantage for the Big South semifinals and can claim the regular season title with a victory at Gardner-Webb. High Point and USC Upstate drew 1-1 Saturday night leaving the Panthers with 15 points and Spartans with 12 entering Wednesday's play.
Neither the Camels nor Blue Hose (9-4-2, 2-3-2) could find the net until
Jalen James hit a shot that was blocked in the box and Amiche calmly curled a left-footed shot inside the left post. Amiche, who played just nine minutes Saturday while returning from injury, scored his seventh goal of the year just a minute later.
Tyler Young drove corner kick into the box, and PC keeper Leo Stritter was able to get a hand on it but was unable to clear. The ball fell to Amiche, who slotted a low shot to double the lead.
In the 83rd minute
Moses Mensah slid a pass to James, who cut a pass back to Lopes, who met the ball in stride and rammed a right-footed effort just inside the right post.
Campbell keeper
Edu Rodriguez made two saves – one diving stop in the first half on Nile Nguidjol's counter-attack attempt – to record his fourth shutout of the season.
The Camels finished with an 18-3 edge in shots – 13-1 after halftime. The loss eliminated Presbyterian from the four-team Big South Championship, which begins Sunday, Nov. 6.
"It was an important win because we're still fighting for the league race, so to get three points is critical," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "Even though I thought we were creating a lot of good opportunities, we just hadn't gotten one yet. Then Kemy comes in and he's only allowed to play limited minutes, and in the few minutes he plays he gets two quick goals and just shows his class."
Despite missing seven matches due to injury, Amiche ran his team-leading points total to 18 on seven goals and four assists. James, who finished with two assists, is one point behind (17) on seven goals and three assists.
