NC State holds off Camels 73-67

Ricky Clemons scores 18 points with career-high 8 assists

RALEIGH, N.C. – Terquavion Smith and Jarkel Joiner combined for 36 points and NC State held off upset-minded Campbell 73-67 Friday night at PNC Arena.

Ricky Clemons scored 18 points and dealt a career-high eight assists for Campbell, which shot 47 percent from the floor and made 10-of-18 threes (.556).

Against a team that was coming off a 49-point victory over Austin Peay, Campbell (1-1) never trailed by double digits and twice cut the deficit to just two points in the final 1:39.

Smith scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, while Joiner had 13 of his 17 in the second period for NC State (2-0), which shot 50 percent for the game and made three more free throws (21-32) than the Camels attempted (7-18).

A fifth-year senior from Rolesville, Clemons made 6-of-10 from the field, including both of his 3-point attempts, grabbed six rebounds, had two steals and committed only one turnover in 37 minutes.  Jesus Carralero added 13 points, seven boards and six assists, while Joshua Lusane chipped in 11 points in 19 minutes off the bench.

State stretched its lead to 57-48 on Joiner's bucket with 9:52 to play.  However, Carralero knocked down a three, Clemons scored in transition and Gediminas Mokseckas hit a wing triple to cut the gap to 58-56 with 7:22 to go.  The Wolfpack was unable to widen the gap to more than a two-possession game the rest of the way.

The Wolfpack closed the opening period on a 9-2 run and led 39-34 at the break.  Campbell shot 48 percent (12-21) from the field – including 6-of-9 from 3-point distance – in the first half.

Smith led NC State with 17 first-half points, including 4-of-5 threes. The Wolfpack shot 61 percent (14-of-23) overall in the first 20 minutes, including 4-of-9 behind the arc.

Campbell returns to action next Friday at Appalachian State in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
