BOONE, N.C. – Devon Dunn scored 18 points to lead Campbell to a 63-58 win over Appalachian State Friday night at the Holmes Convocation Center.
Dunn opened and closed a key 10-2 run late in the game for the Camels (2-1), who led for more than 36 minutes on the home floor of a Mountaineer team that won 61-60 Tuesday at Louisville.
Jesus Carralero added 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds, plus three assists, while
Ricky Clemons chipped in nine points and four assists for the Camels, who held Appalachian to just 36 percent shooting.
Donovan Gregory led Appalachian State (3-1) with 21 points and seven boards, while CJ Huntley added 12 for the Mountaineers, who made just 7-of-25 threes (.280) and 9-of-18 (.500) from the line.
The Camels took their largest lead (42-32) on Clemons' 3-point play with 14:10 to play. However, the Mountaineers responded with a 17-5 surge and moved ahead for the first time 49-47 on Gregory's bucket in the paint with 7:05 remaining.
Dunn started the decisive run with a wing three with 5:45 to go and Carralero's reverse layup provided the Camels with a 52-51 lead they would not lose. Appalachian missed nine-straight shots from the floor as the Camels built a 59-52 cushion on Jay Pal's spin move in the lane.
Terence Harcum brought the Mountaineers within 59-55 on a triple with 32.3 seconds left, but Clemons hit 3-of-4 and Dunn 1-of-2 from the stripe over the last 31.6 seconds to seal the victory.
The Camels, whose only loss came a week ago by a 73-67 margin at NC State, shot 46 percent overall (23-50) Friday night, made 8-of-22 (.364) threes and 9-of-16 (.563) from the line. Campbell committed just nine turnovers and had 15 assists on 23 buckets, while outscoring the hosts 30-26 in the paint.
Campbell led by as many as nine in the opening half when Anthony Dell'Orso hit a wing three to give CU an 18-9 edge and by a 29-24 margin at the break.
Kennesaw State defeated Southeastern Louisiana 72-68 in Friday afternoon's opening game.
The Camels square off against Southeastern Louisiana (2-2) Saturday at 4:00 p.m., before Appalachian State hosts Kennesaw State at 7:00 p.m. The event concludes Sunday when the Camels take on Kennesaw State in a 12:00 p.m. tip, followed by Appalachian vs. SLU.
