WEST POINT, N.Y. –
Taye Ghadiali and
Gabriel Hixenbaugh both won their brackets, leading Campbell at the Army West Point Invitational on Sunday.
Ghadiali claimed the heavyweight title, while Hixenbaugh won the 133 pound bracket, both going 4-0 and headlining eight CU placers.
Also placing in the tournament were Domenic Zaccone, taking third at 133 pounds, Zander Phaturos at 125 pounds, Shannon Hanna at 141 and Chad Nix at heavyweight all earning fourth place finishes, while
Troy Nation at 157 and Cole Rees at 174 both placed fifth.
Hixenbaugh registered four decisions, including a 10-3 win over Buffalo's Cole Minnick to start the day, and taking the first place match 4-2 over Bloomsburg's Cole Rhone.
Ghadiali, meanwhile, opened the tournament by pinning Bloomsburg's Tyler McCatharn (1:22), also taking a major decision over Army's Austin Kohlhofer, 18-6. He topped No. 26 Zach Knighton-Ward from Hofstra, 9-4, for the tournament title in a rematch from the 2022 NCAA Championships.
CAMEL TALK
"It feels good to go out and win my first tournament of the year," said Ghadiali. "I'm not content with my performance though. I want to dominate each match. It feels good beating an opponent that I have wrestled three times. It is always hard but I'm glad I got the dub before Thanksgiving."
"I am happy with this being my first tournament win of my college career," said Hixenbaugh. "It definitely wasn't an easy one. I had some tight, hard fought matches, but I'm looking forward to growing and getting better to widen the gap."
"I'm proud of every single one of our guys today," said CU associate head coach Wynn Michalak. "We fought through every second in matches. Several guys really impressed me up and down the lineup. The improvements I saw today that we will continue to make every week are what will set us up for the end of the season. Special recognition to our champs Taye and Gabe who wrestled great today! I am also very proud of our guys that wrestled at Life University this weekend as well."
