Camels outlast Hatters 87-85 in OT

Lusane (29) and Clemons (22) hit career highs

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Joshua Lusane and Ricky Clemons hit career highs to lead Campbell to an 87-85 win in overtime over Stetson Sunday at Gore Arena.

Lusane scored 29 points and Clemons 22 for the Camels (4-3), who shot 60 percent on the day, including 81 percent (17-21) in the second half.  Freshman Anthony Dell'Orso added 16 points and Jay Pal 10 for the Camels, who won despite missing two starters due to injury and illness.

Grand Canyon transfer Jalen Blackmon came off the bench to lead Stetson (3-2) with 21 points.  Stephan Swenson (16), Cyncier Harrison (15) and Josh Smith (14) also hit double figures for the Hatters, who opened the year with an 83-74 win at Florida State.

Stetson led by as many as 11 in the first half and by 10 (50-40) after Alvin Tumblin converted a 3-point play with 14:59 left in the second period.  However, the Camels clawed back and Clemons' drive to the bucket capped a 10-0 run and gave CU a 56-55 edge with 11:15 to play.

Neither team led by more than four the rest of the period.  Lusane converted at the rim to put the Camels up 77-76 with 47 seconds to play, but Josh Smith answered with a half hook in the paint with 26 seconds to go to give the Hatters a one-point lead.

Clemons was fouled on the way to the basket with 5.9 seconds left and tied the score by making one of two from the stripe.  Harrison had a look at a corner three, but his attempt at the buzzer hit the rim and bounced away.

Swenson's steal and bucket gave the Hatters an 85-83 edge with 57 seconds remaining in OT, but Lusane converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to put the Camels back on top 86-85 with 31 seconds left.

Blackmon missed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go, Pal rebounded, and Clemons hit the first of two from the line for a two-point Camel edge with 7 seconds remaining. Swenson's off-balance three at the buzzer missed off the iron.

Led by Pal and Dell'Orso with eight rebounds each, Campbell finished with a 30-24 advantage on the boards.  Stetson shot 54 percent (35-65) overall, made 11-of-29 (.379) threes, but just 4-of-5 from the line.

After going 0-of-5 beyond the arc in the first half, Campbell finished 7-of-15 (.467) from 3-point distance on the day and hit 20-of-25 free throws (.800).  Lusane, Clemons and Dell'Orso each finished with four assists.

A senior center, Lusane made 11-of-15 shots, including 2-of-4 threes and 5-of-7 from the line.  Clemons, a fifth-year senior guard, knocked down 7-of-8 from the field and 7-of-10 from the stripe.

The Hatters shot 52 percent in the opening half and took a 36-29 lead at the break.  Stetson knocked down 6-of-14 threes before intermission.

NOTES:  Since returning to the Big South Conference in 2011-12, Campbell is 9-2 vs. ASUN members and has won 9 of its last 10 against the ASUN… Sunday's contest between the Camels and Hatters was the 39th in the series which dates to 1977-78, Campbell's first on the Division I level.  Campbell has won the last nine meetings... The Camels return to action Friday with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at East Carolina.
