Camels reclaim top spot with win at HPU

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Campbell moved back into first place in the Big South standings by completing the regular-season sweep of High Point in five sets Thursday night at the Millis Center. It's Campbell's first time sweeping the regular season series against the Panthers since 2014.

The win takes Campbell to 16-9, 12-1 in the league, while HPU falls to 18-9, 11-2.

Strong defense and efficient offense both helped Campbell to a 25-16 opening set win, with Campbell having now won the first set in seven straight matches. The Camels hit .259 in the opening stanza while holding HPU to hitting .000.

The second set was a fight the whole way for Campbell to take it 25-22. The Camels trailed by three early, the largest deficit of the set until CU matched it with the final point. Chloe Cook and Gwen Wolkow each logged three kills in the set to lead the attack.

High Point bounced back in the third set, taking it 25-17. The Campbell offense faltered to hitting only .111 in the third, while HPU found its rhythm to hit .267. Campbell never led in the set after falling behind in the early going.

HPU evened things up with a convincing 25-15 forth set win.  This time it was Campbell hitting .000 in the frame, committing 11 attack errors along the way. HPU had only nine kills from a total of three players in the fourth, but too many Campbell errors led to the result.

The fifth set was one for the ages, with Campbell taking a nailbiter 21-19. The Camels fought off two match points after trailing 14-12, and later had three match points of their own they were unable to capitalize on, taking the squads to a stalemate at 19-19. An attack error from Sydney Palazzolo set up a tip from Wolkow that found space near the right boundary for the win.

Chloe Cook was the steady presence on offense for the Camels, notching 13 kills on 43 swings. Wolkow joined her in double figures with 10, while Clent and Green had nine each. Four Camels logged double-figure digs, led by 24 from Claranne. Fechter. Emily Mitter and McKenna Sciacca nearly split assists with 23 and 21, respectively.

Campbell returns to home to face Radford on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Buies Creek. That match will be streamed on ESPN+.
