Camels head to Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas

CU to face Cleveland State and Jacksonville State

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell heads to Las Vegas this week for the Holiday Hoops Classic. The tournament held at the South Point Arena features games against Cleveland State on Tuesday (6:30 PM) and Jacksonville State (4:15 PM).

Both games will be broadcast on BallerTV.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Playing in front of more than 2,500 elementary school children, Campbell rolled to a 101-38 win over William Peace last Wednesday in the program's annual Education Day game at Gore Arena
  • With a near sellout crowd of 3,024 in attendance, Gianni Boone (19) and Erika Joseph (18) hit career scoring highs for Campbell (5-4), which led 35-13 after one quarter and 55-21 at halftime
  • Svenia Nurenberg contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double and hit a layup in transition to put the Camels over the 100-point mark with 11 seconds to play
  • Christabel Ezumah added 12 points on 5-of-5 from the floor, while Brittany Staves chipped in 10 for the Camels, whose 63-point victory margin was tied for seventh-most in the program's history

SERIES HISTORY

  • Campbell leads the all-time series against William Peace, 3-0
  • Campbell won last year's matchup, also an Education Day game, 85-44. Five Camels finished in double-figures including 13 points from Svenia Nurenberg off the bench
  • The Camels have won each of the previous three matchups by an average of 40.6 points

  • Cleveland State owns a 9-1 record this season, rattling off nine-straight wins after a season-opener loss at No. 8 Iowa State
  • The Vikings boast an elite defense, holding foes to 56.5 ppg this season (No. 48 nationally) and 33.4 percent shooting from the field (No. 12 nationally) and 25.7 percent from three (No. 43 nationally)
  • Junior gurad Destiny Leo is averaging a team-high 17.9 points shooting 44.4 percent from the field, 39.7 percent from three and 90 percent on free throws
  • Cleveland State is led by head coach Chris Kielsmeier who owns a 75-50 record in his fifth season
  • Jacksonville State is 4-4 on the season entering the Holiday Hoops Classic
  • The Gamecocks also own a great defense, limiting opponents to 55.5 points per game (No. 32 nationally) and 25.4 percent shooting from three (No. 40 nationally)
  • Jax State also ranks as one of the best teams in terms of taking care of the ball, ranking No. 7 nationally averaging just 11.6 turnovers per game and ranking No. 24 with a turnover margin of 6.00
  • The Gamecocks have three scorers who are averaging double-digit points per game, led by fifth-year guard Imari Martin with 13.8 ppg
  • Rick Pietri is the head coach for the Gamecocks, holding a 147-125 record in his 10th season

HEAD COACH RONNY FISHER

  • A three-time Big South Coach of the Year and the winningest active coach in the conference, Ronny Fisher is in his  seventh season at the helm of Campbell University women's basketball

  • As the current longest-tenured Big South coach in his 15th season, Fisher leads all active coaches in the conference with 220 wins overall including 136 in the Big South
  • Under Fisher, the Camels won the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Big South regular season titles and finished as Big South tournament runner-up in 2019, 2021 and 2022
  • Fisher has also led Campbell to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2021-22 along with two other postseason appearances in the WBI. He helped the Camels claim their first ever postseason win in the 2019 WBI
