BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Down 16-0, Virginia won the match's final five bouts to top Campbell 18-16 on Sunday at the Pope Convocation Center / Gore Arena.
Virginia moved to 2-1 on the season, while Campbell dropped to 2-4 overall.
CU jumped out to a 16-0 lead, starting with
Levi Hopkins' 13-3 major decision to lead off the match at 197 pounds, picking up back points to close the second frame and riding out the third period for the bonus point win. No. 13
Taye Ghadiali followed with a 10-5 decision over Jessie Knight.
Anthony Molton notched another decision for the Camels at 125 pounds, tallying a go-ahead takedown with 10 seconds remaining to top Kyle Montaperto, and
Domenic Zaccone outlasted Garrett Grice at 133, 6-5.
Shannon Hanna then claimed a 5-1 decision at 141 pounds to give the Camels the 16-0 advantage.
After No. 29 Jarod Verkleeren's 3-1 win at 149 put the Cavaliers on the board, Denton Spencer's pin (1:10) at 157 put Virginia back within striking distance, at 16-9.
No. 9 Justin McCoy then took a 9-3 decision at 165 pounds for UVA, and Justin Phillips earned the 2-1 edge at 174, setting up a winner take all nationally ranked final bout at 184, where No. 30 Neil Antrassian defeated No. 18
Caleb Hopkins 9-3.
Next up, Campbell will head to the Purdue Duals, taking on the host Boilermakers, as well as Drexel and Utah Valley. The Camels will return home on January 7, hosting Nebraska and Gardner-Webb.
