EVANSVILLE, IND. – Evansville closed the game on a 16-4 run and rallied to defeat Campbell 72-66 Wednesday night at the Ford Center.
The Camels (4-5) led 62-56 after
Devon Dunn's three with 3:30 to play, but Missouri Valley Conference member Evansville (3-8) answered with a 12-2 burst.
Antoine Smith, Jr., hit a three that gave Evansville the lead for good (66-64) with 1:00 to play, then knocked down both ends of a 1-and-1 with 12 seconds left to seal the win.
Marvin Coleman and Yacine Toumi led Evansville with 18 points each, while Smith added 15 for the Purple Aces, who shot 49 percent (26-53) on the night and made 9-of-24 (.375) threes.
Ricky Clemons did not miss a shot from the floor (5-5) or line (5-5) and led Campbell with 15 points, plus four assists.
Joshua Lusane added 13 points and four assists, while
Anthony Dell'Orso chipped in 13, plus eight rebounds.
Jay Pal finished with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for his second-straight double-double.
In a game where neither team led by more than six points, the lead changed 19 times and was tied on nine occasions.
Campbell finished the night shooting 44 percent (23-52) from the floor, but just 24 percent (5-of-21) from three-point range while knocking down 15-of-16 (.938) free throws.
Neither team led by more than five in the opening half as the Aces took a 31-28 lead at the break. Clemons (9), Dell'Orso (9) and Lusane (7) combined for all but three of Campbell's first half points.
After a break for final exams, Campbell returns to action next Wednesday (Dec. 14) with a 6:00 p.m. start vs. William Peace.
