BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's offense struggled to produce as Campbell was shut out by No. 22 Maryland in a 3-0 loss Friday night. Both starting pitchers were stellar, but a manufactured run in the first proved to be enough for the unbeaten Terrapins.
Â
The loss drops Campbell to 1-4, the worst five-game start for the program since the 2018 team also began the year 1-4. Maryland improves to 5-0 with the win.
Â
Thomas Harrington turned in a quality start for the Camels, posting a line of 7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 Ks. But the lone run in the first scored via walk, stolen base and double, was just enough to tag him with the loss.
Through two starts this season Harrington has totaled 13 innings, allowed just three hits, one run, and struck out 22.
Â
His counterpart, Nick Dean, was equally impressive for Maryland and finished with a line of 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 Ks to pick up his second win of the season.
Â
Campbell's best chance came in the eighth. Denning and Jordan reached to begin the frame, but a double steal saw Denning thrown out at third, and a strikeout quickly had things looking bleak for the Camels. Two more walks loaded the bases with two away for
Bryce Arnold, but the sophomore went down swinging and Campbell came up empty.
Â
Maryland didn't miss their chance to add on in the top of the ninth. After three free passes issued by
Ryan Chasse to start the inning, a pair of singles drove in three to provide a little insurance for the Terps, and pushed the score to the eventual 4-0 final.
Â
It was Campbell's first shutout loss since falling to Duke 5-0 on Mar. 4, 2020.
Â
Campbell's four hits on the night were spread to four different players.
Zach Neto reached three times out of the leadoff spot with a hit and a pair of walks.
Â
Of Maryland's two hits, Nick Lorusso was responsible for two, along with a pair of RBIs.
Â
The series picks up again tomorrow at 3 p.m. with
Cade Kuehler expected to take the mound for Campbell to face Ryan Ramsey.
