BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Thomas Harrington dealt a season-high 8.0 innings to lead the Fighting Camels to a 5-2 win over Presbyterian to open Big South play Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
The win moves Campbell to 10-11, 1-0 in league play, while PC falls to 8-13, 0-4 in the Big South after opening their conference slate last weekend.
Harrington lowered his ERA to 1.32 en route to his fifth win of the season. The sophomore fanned 10 on the night, his third outing of the year reaching double-digit strikeouts. He posted a final line of 8.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 10 Ks. He was efficient for most of the outing and had faced just one over the minimum through five innings of work.
Harrington has now gone at least six innings in all six starts and is yet to allow more than two earned runs in a start while owning a strikeout to walk ratio of 56:6.
The Camel offense kept pressure on PC for most of the night, scoring one run in five separate innings. Campbell scored in each the second through fourth, thanks to a
Dylan Koontz RBI groundout,
Logan Jordan RBI single and a
Drake Pierson home run, his third of the year.
The Blue Hose drew to within a run with two of their own on an RBI groundout in the sixth, and a solo home run in the seventh, the first of the season against Harrington.
But Campbell quickly pushed the lead back to three runs thanks to a run scoring double from
Connor Denning and a
Waldy Arias RBI groundout.
Campbell played error-free baseball on the evening and made a few big plays behind Harrington and
Ryan Chasse. Notably, Jordan threw out a runner at the plate in the fifth and ended the game with a sliding grab in left.
Chasse earned the save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning and a pair of punchouts.
Jordan had a pair of hits on the evening, while six other Camels had a base knock and five different players drove in a run each.
A crowd of 1,033 was on hand for contest followed by Friday night fireworks. It is the third game of the season that cracks into the top-10 of all-time attendances at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Camels and Blue Hose will be back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m.
Cade Kuehler is expected to get the start for Campbell. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
