Late home runs lift Camels past Monarchs

NORFOLK, Va. – Two late two-run home runs propelled the Camels past Old Dominion 8-6 Tuesday night at Bud Metheny Stadium. Ty Babin tied the game in the eighth and Connor Denning ultimately won it for Campbell in the ninth.

The win gets Campbell back to .500 at 12-12 for the season while Old Dominion drops just their fifth game and moves to 18-5.

Old Dominion took an early 2-0 lead with a run in each the second and third while Campbell struggled to figure out Monarch starting pitcher Blake Morgan. Morgan struck out eight in three innings of work, with eight straight outs recorded via strikeout.

Beginning in the fifth, the game became a true back and forth affair. With Morgan pulled after the third, Campbell evened the score with a pair of runs in the fifth with a pair of doubles down the left field line from Waldy Arias and Zach Williams.

ODU briefly retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Arias gave Campbell its first lead of the night the following inning with a two-out RBI single to put the Camels on top 4-3. The lead didn't last long as the Monarchs tied it in the bottom of the sixth and took the lead with a two-run seventh to go ahead 6-4.

As was the norm Tuesday night, the lead did not last past that half inning before Babin clobbered a two-run shot to right field to knot the game at 6-6 in the top of the eighth. It was Babin's first home run of the year and second of his career.

Campbell took the lead for good on Denning's two-run shot in the top of the ninth that stayed just inside the right field foul pole. It was Denning's third home run in the last two games, as well as his third of the year. The Camels then loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth, but couldn't tack on any insurance runs.

The lack of insurance runs nearly cost the Camels when ODU loaded the bases in the ninth, but Garret Kangas came in and got the last out  with the only batter he faced to leave them loaded and pick up his first career save.

Jake Murray (1-0) earned the win tossing 1.1 scoreless innings across the eighth and ninth.

Denning paced the offense with three hits on the night while four other Camels chipped in two apiece during a 13-hit night for Campbell.

The Camels are back in action Friday night at Gardner-Webb for another Big South series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m. with Thomas Harrington expected to get the ball for the Camels. Friday and Sunday's games this weekend will be streamed on ESPN+.
