Harrington and Cummings toss gem in 4-1 win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Great pitching and one big inning carried the Camels to a series opening 4-1 win over Gardner-Webb Friday night at John Henry Moss Stadium. Thomas Harrington and Ty Cummings combined to strike out 15 on the evening as Campbell climbed back above .500 for the first time since opening day.

The win gets Campbell to 13-12, 3-1 in the Big South. Gardner-Webb falls to 10-17, 1-3 in the league.

Harrington was brilliant again for the Camels, finishing one shy of his career-high in strikeouts en route to his sixth win of the year. He was about as unhittable as he's been all season through his final 3.2 innings of work. Of the last 11 outs he recorded, 10 came via strikeout including each of the final seven.

He worked into a bit of a jam in the sixth, with two on and one out, but got back-to-back batters to go down looking to escape the threat in what felt like a pivotal moment.

The sophomore posted a final line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 12 Ks.

Drake Pierson put the Camels on the board in a loud way with a long three-run home run to left field in the second inning. Waldy Arias drove in another run in the frame to help the Camels take a 4-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb's only run also came in the second inning, getting one in the only inning Harrington faltered. One walk and a pair of singles drove in the run to cut the lead to 4-1.

Following Harrington, Cummings kept things rolling and worked three scoreless innings to earn the three-inning save. Cummings did not allow a hit and struck out three over his three innings of work.

Pierson and Connor Denning paced the offense with two-hits each, and Ty Babin logged his first triple since the 2018 season. Babin reached three times with a walk and hit-by-pitch as well.

The Camels and Runnin' Bulldogs return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. as Campbell looks to secure the series win. Cade Kuehler is expected to get the nod for the Camels.
