Drew Winters' 3-run homer lifted Campbell to an 8-6 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday at Bill Masters Field.
In a game that included seven lead changes, Winters launched his first round-tripper in a Camel uniform on a 3-1 pitch from Gabe Pilla (0-1) over the wall in right-center field.
In just his 12th at-bat of the season, Winters – a red-shirt sophomore transfer from John Logan (Ill.) CC – collected his first extra base hit that provided the margin in a fourth-straight Campbell (14-12, 4-1) win.
The winning rally started with one out in the ninth when
Ty Babin and
Drake Pierson delivered back-to-back singles in front of Winters, who had entered the game in the eighth as a pinch hitter.
Cade Boxrucker (1-0) allowed three runs over three innings of relief to earn the win.
Ryan Chasse tossed a scoreless ninth – working around a two-out hit and walk – to earn his third save.
Jarrod Belbin,
Zach Williams and Pierson each had a pair of hits in Campbell's 11-hit attack. Jacob Marcos, Curtis Robison and Pete Capobianco delivered two hits apiece for Gardner-Webb (10-18, 1-4).
Camel starter
Cade Kuehler allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out eight over five innings, but did not figure in the decision.
The teams conclude the series Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. start.
