BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell secured its fifth Big South series win of the year with a 13-3 victory over Longwood Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium. The Camels have outscored the Lancers 22-5 through the first two games of the series.
The win improves Campbell to 24-13, 13-1 in the Big South while Longwood falls to 18-22, 8-6 in league play.
There was plenty of offense to go around with the Camels tallying 14 hits, six of those going for extra bases.
Zach Neto and
Tyler Halstead each collected three hits on the day while
Connor Denning posted a team-high three RBI.
Drake Pierson was 2-4 with both hits being doubles off the left-field wall.
Cade Boxrucker and
Ty Cummings were steady on the mound, combining to strike out 13. Boxrucker (3-0) fanned a career-high nine batters in his five innings of work to earn the win. Cummings tossed the last four innings scoreless allowing just one hit and striking out four to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Campbell got on the board in the first on an RBI single from
Logan Jordan. The Camels used some small ball in the second inning to plate a pair, laying down three straight bunts to help account for two runs in the inning.
Denning broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run bomb in the fifth, his ninth of the year, to give the Camels the lead for good. Campbell tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth with two doubles and triple to take a 10-run lead.
Ty Babin's RBI triple in the inning gave him 25 RBI on the season, a new career-high for the fifth-year senior.
Campbell stole a season-high seven bases on the afternoon, led by
Zach Neto with three.
Longwood's Kevin Warunek was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned in 4.1 innings of work. Four more pitchers combined to toss the remaining 3.2 innings.
The Camels and Lancers are back for the series finale tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Aaron Rund is expected to get the start for the Camels.
