BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell dropped just its second conference game of the season in a 10-5 loss to Longwood Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped a 12-game conference win streak.
The loss drops Campbell to 24-14, 13-2 in league play while Longwood improves to 19-22, 9-6 in the Big South.
The Camels never led in the contest, falling behind 1-0 after the first. Despite allowing five runs through just two innings, the Campbell offense kept it close with a four-run second of its own to trail 5-4 after two innings.
The big second inning featured five hits, and runs driven in by Pierson, Halstead, Belbin and Harrill. Pierson drove in a run with his fourth double of the weekend, and Halstead dropped a perfect squeeze bunt for a base hit.
Longwood took the lead for good with four runs across the fourth and fifth innings. The Lancers got three in the fifth with the runs scoring on a wild pitch and an outfield error.
After Longwood starter Andrew Melynk allowed four runs in 1.2 innings, the relief duo of Moninick D'Ercole and Michael Tolson quited the Campbell offense and held the Camels to just three hits and one run in the next 7.1 innings. Tolson earned the save tossing four innings without allowing a hit.
Six Campbell pitchers allowed 15 hits on the day, the second most of the season, along with issuing four walks and plunking five batters.
Jonathan Beymer was the most effective Campbell pitcher, allowing just one run in 3.0 innings of work.
Ryan Chasse was tagged with the loss, despite striking out five in his 2.2 innings.
Belbin, Denning and Halstead all had multi-hit games, accounting for six of Campbell's eight hits.
Waldy Arias also reached three times without a hit, getting walked once and hit by two pitches. Arias has now been beaned 53 times at Campbell good for second-most in program history.
The Fighting Camels now face two midweek games heading into the exam break. They'll head to Wilmington on Tuesday to face UNCW at 6 p.m. and return home to host UNCG Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
