BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels trailed by five runs heading to the seventh, but posted nine runs across the seventh and eighth innings to pick up an 11-7 win over UNC Greensboro Wednesday night.
Zach Neto tied the game with a solo home run and
Ty Babin put the Camels ahead with a three-run shot in the eighth.
The win improves Campbell to 26-14 on the year, while UNCG falls to 17-24 as the team's split the season series. The win is Campbell's seventh of the year that has been won in their final at-bat, and the third win of the season when trailing after seven innings.
Jarrod Belbin got things started as early as possible for the offense, launching the first pitch out to right field, Campbell's first leadoff blast of the year.
The Spartans slowly built a five-run lead with one, two, and three run innings from the fourth to the sixth. They tagged Campbell starter
Jonathan Beymer for three and
Jake Murray for two of those runs.
Trailing 7-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Camels got four runs, scoring two runs on a pair of singles that were each coupled with errors on the plays.
Tyler Halstead chopped one up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs and the ball got away from the second baseman behind the bag to allow a pair to score. Belbin then singled to right and a misplay from the right fielder allowed Halstead to score from first to draw within a run.
Neto wasted no time tying the game, going the other way on the first pitch of the eighth inning for his seventh blast of the season. A walk and single set up Babin's go-ahead home run, a 428' bomb to the top of the scoreboard in right. Halstead collected one more RBI to round out the scoring for the Camels.
Ryan Chasse (2-1) earned the win tossing the final three innings with the only baserunner allowed being a two-out walk in the ninth.
Despite two errors, the Campbell defense helped the pitchers out throughout the night with three double plays.
Belbin, Babin and Halstead all had two hits apiece, with Babin collecting a team-high three RBI. Nine different Camels scored runs on the evening.
Campbell has this weekend off for exams and returns to action at home on Tuesday May 3 against Duke. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. There will be no video stream for the game, but the radio call will be available on GoCamels.com.
