HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Fighting Camels held on late to open the weekend series with an 8-5 win at High Point Friday afternoon. The win drops Campbell's magic number to just two to claim the Big South regular season title.
The Camels improve to 33-14 on the season and 17-2 in Big South play, while High Point falls to 19-30, 10-9 in the league. Campbell has now won 23 of its last 25 games, and has won
Campbell connected for three more home runs on the afternoon, beginning with two two-run shots in the second from Babin and Halstead. Babin has now homered four times this week, and six times in his last four starts. With Halstead's two hits on the day, the center fielder is now batting .542 in 14 conference games.
Zach Neto added a solo shot to lead off the ninth, his fourth straight game with a home run. With his single in the first inning, Neto carried his hit streak to 21 games, a new career high. During his hit streak, he's slashing .414/.514/.805 with 10 doubles, eight home runs and 18 RBI. In addition to the hit streak, Neto has reached safely in 39 of 40 games played this season, and in every game since Mar. 2.
After the four-run second inning, Campbell added one run in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings with RBI from Denning, Harrill, and Halstead.
Campbell pitching worked into, and mostly out of jams throughout the night, getting High Point to leave 10 on base. None were a bigger escape than the bottom of ninth. After issuing three free passes with two outs,
Ryan Chasse came back with a three-pitch strikeout to leave the potential tying run on base and winning run at the plate.
Harrington (10-1) earned his nation's best 10
th win of the season with a line of 6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. He has now turned in a quality start in all 11 starts this season that weren't shortened by rain.
Ryan Chasse earned his team-high sixth save of the year with 2.2 scoreless innings to finish the game, striking out five in the process.
Neto led the way at the plate with three hits, while Belbin, Pierson and Halstead all had two each.
Campbell and High Point face off again tomorrow at 6 p.m.
Cade Boxrucker is expected to get the start for the Camels.
