Camels score 22 to sweep WInthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Drake Pierson had a big day at the plate to pace Campbell to a 22-7 win and a series sweep at Winthrop. Pierson tallied a career-high six RBI with a pair of home runs and a grand slam on the afternoon as Campbell scored its second most runs on the second most hits of the season.

The sweep takes Campbell to 30-14, 16-2 in the Big South, while Winthrop falls to 13-32, 7-11 in the league.

Jarrob Belbin needed just one at-bat to put the Camels on the board, notching his second leadoff home run of the year. Winthrop's leadoff man responded with a leadoff shot of his own to tie the game up.

The Camels took the lead for good with a four run second, courtesy of five singles in the inning. They added two more on the first of Pierson's homers on the day, a two-run shot to center field.

Leading just 7-5, Campbell broke the game open with 11 runs across the sixth and seventh innings on eight hits. Pierson's grand slam was the big blow during the innings, but Winthrop issued three walks and committed four errors in the two frames to keep Campbell in motion.

Zach Neto added to the home run tally with a two-run shot in the eight, and Jack Ellis blasted the first home run of his career in the ninth with a solo-shot to right.

Along with Pierson, Grant Knipp had a three-hit day, while five different Camels scored three runs each. Campbell collected 18 hits on the day, while Winthrop pitching allowed 11 free passes with nine walks and two hit batters.

Aaron Rund (4-1) earned the win tossing 5.0 IP, 4 H , 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 8 K. Rund's eight strikeouts are a season-high, and match a career-high for the redshirt junior. Chandler Williford made his first pitching appearance of the season with a scoreless ninth.

The Camels face a quick turnaround, with Campbell heading for a midweek series at Ohio State on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch in Columbus is set for 6 pm Tuesday night.
