Camels win Big South men's sports trophy

Campbell finishes 2nd in Sasser Cup and women's sports trophy race

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – After claiming six titles, Campbell was presented the Big South Conference men's sports trophy for the fourth-consecutive season.

Campbell, which combined to win 13 men's and women's league titles during the 2021-22 campaign finished as runner-up in both the George F. "Buddy" Sasser Cup and women's sports trophy standings.

"The 2021-22 season was truly a record-breaking one for Campbell Athletics, highlighted by a school-record 13 conference championships – including 12 in the Big South – and dozens of all-conference performers, both academically and athletically," Campbell University Director of Athletics Dr. Omar Banks said. "We were delighted that our fans and supporters were able to return to our arenas and stadiums to support our teams, and look forward to more success in the seasons to come."

In addition to the Southern Conference wrestling championship title, the Camels won 12 Big South championships in 2021-22 – baseball, women's golf, men's soccer, softball, men's indoor track & field and volleyball, plus regular season crowns in baseball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and men's tennis.  CU finished as runner-up in the regular season in women's tennis and volleyball.

The Men's Sports Trophy was presented to Dr. Banks during the Big South's spring meetings Wednesday night.

Campbell averaged 10.21 Sasser Cup points during the 2021-22 campaign, second only to High Point (10.28), which competes in four fewer league sports.  Charleston Southern (8.64) was third and Longwood fourth (7.48) in the 12-team Sasser Cup standings.

In the men's sports standings, Campbell finished with 9.94 points, followed by High Point (9.43), Charleston Southern (9.39) and USC Upstate (7.68).

High Point (11.03) topped the women's sports standings, followed by the Camels (10.45), Longwood (8.07) and Charleston Southern (8.06).

Only Campbell and Gardner-Webb compete in all 19 sports sponsored by the conference.  CU also competes in the Southern Conference (wrestling) and Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (women's swimming).

During the 2021-22 campaign, CU claimed the Big South's automatic berth to NCAA postseason competition in men's soccer, volleyball, women's golf, softball and baseball.  The Camels won the 2022 Southern Conference wrestling tournament wrestling title and sent six athletes to the NCAA Championships.

CU owns more Sasser Cup trophies (1992, 1993, 1994, 2019, 2021) – five – than any other current Big South member.  Campbell was runner-up in the 2017 and 2018 Sasser Cup standings. During its 17-year tenure in the Atlantic Sun Conference (1995-2011), Campbell finished as high as third in the combined men's and women's all-sports race.

Campbell's fourth-straight men's sports trophy comes on the heels of steady success over the last seven seasons.  CU finished third in the 2016 Sasser Cup before placing second in 2017 and 2018.  In the men's sports race, Campbell was third in 2016 and second in 2017 before winning the last four seasons.  The Campbell women finished third in 2016, 2017 and 2018 before rising to second in 2019, 2021 and 2022.  The Sasser Cup was not awarded in 2020 after the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sasser Cup is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser (1989-96) and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system.  Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the League's 19 championships, and the average of the combined total is used to determine the overall point allocation in the respective sport.  One bonus point is added to the average total for each conference champion/automatic qualifier representative, as well as any teams that receive at-large NCAA Championships berths.  Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned.  Each member's overall point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
