KNOXVILLE, TENN. – Campbell topped Georgia Tech 15-8 to open play at the Knoxville Regional Friday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Campbell offense exploded for a program record number of hits (18) in an NCAA tournament game with 10 going for extra bases to power past the Yellow Jackets.
The win takes Campbell to 41-17 on the year and was Campbell's fourth win over an ACC foe.
Thomas Harrington collected his 12
th win of the season on the hill, retaking the national lead as well as setting a program-record for single season wins. Harrington tossed 7.0 innings and allowed just five runs against one of the nation's top offenses.
The offensive barrage began in a loud way in the second inning, with
Logan Jordan putting the Camels on the board with a leadoff home run. The home run was the first of three in the frame, with
Tyler Halstead and
Jarrod Belbin later sending back-to-back pitchers over the scoreboard in right. In total, Campbell scored five runs with six extra base hits in the inning.
The Yellow Jackets were pesky at the plate all day, but could never score more than two in a single inning to really threaten the early Campbell lead.
With the lead at 6-2, the Camels posted another five-spot in the sixth inning with all five runs coming on just two swings. Jordan drove in two more with a single before
Ty Babin hit a three-run shot, his 14
th of the year. Babin drove in a season-high five runs during a 2-5 day.
The Camels added four insurance runs across the eighth and ninth innings to allow plenty of breathing room for
Cameron O'Brien to get the final six outs while allowing three runs.
There were big performances up and down the Campbell lineup, but the bulk of the hits came from the heart of it. Neto, Jordan, and Denning all accounted for three hits, and seven total runs out of the 3-4-5 spots in the order. The Camels also worked nine walks to keep busy on the basepaths.
GT found 13 hits of their own, but left 10 on base and were issued only four walks. GT starter John Medich (4-5) took the loss after allowing five runs in just 1.2 innings of work.
Campbell now awaits the winner of Tennessee vs Alabama State in tomorrow's winner's bracket game. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
