Campbell falls 12-7 to No. 1 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – Campbell exchanged punches with No. 1 Tennessee for the majority of Saturday night's regional semifinal, but ultimately fell 12-7 in front of a sold-out crowd at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. It was a one-run game heading to the ninth, but four unearned runs blew the game open late in favor of the Volunteers.

The loss drops Campbell into the regional loser's bracket where they will face Georgia Tech tomorrow at 2 p.m. in an elimination game.

Cade Kuehler punched out 10 batters for the fourth straight time and tied Thomas Harrington for both the season-high and program record with 111 on the year. Kuehler lasted seven innings and allowed seven runs, issuing two walks and striking out 10.

Campbell's seven runs were tied for the fourth most allowed by the Tennessee pitching staff all season. A bulk of the offense was scored off SEC Pitcher of the Year Chase Dollander, tagging him for four runs in just 2.2 innings. The output was tied for the most runs and the second-most hits the sophomore has allowed this season.

Kirby Connell came in for early relief and quieted the Campbell bats, allowing just two earned runs across four innings to earn the win.

Jarrod Belbin drew first blood on the night with a two-run shot off the scoreboard in the bottom of the second to kickstart a four-run frame. Connor Denning and Ty Babin each drove in runs with singles in the inning as well to put the Camels up 4-0.

Tennessee bounced back quickly, scoring seven runs over the next two innings to take the lead for good at 7-4.

Drake Pierson cut it to a one-run game in the seventh with a two-run shot. After UT tacked on an insurance run, Connor Denning again cut it to one with a blast of his own to make it 8-7 heading to the ninth.

But the ninth inning saw the Vols pull away and retire the Camels in order for the only time all night to hang on for the 12-7 win.

In addition to the home runs, Zach Neto had a big day at the plate going 3-5 with a double. Ty Babin and Tyler Halstead collected a pair of hits as well.

The Camels return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Georgia Tech. Streaming information will be available in the morning.
