Tyler Young and
Kemy Amiche scored 54th minute goals and No. 22 Campbell defeated Incarnate Word 3-0 Thursday evening in the season opening HBU Invitational at AVEVA Stadium.
Moses Mensah set up Young's goal at the 53:15 mark then Amiche doubled the advantage just 16 seconds later with his first strike of the of the season.
Gerard Broussard tallied in the 73rd for the Camels, who did not allow a shot by the Cardinals over the last 72 minutes.
All 19 field players in the travel party played at least 11 minutes for Campbell (1-0), which will face host Houston Baptist Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (CDT).
UIW outshot the Camels 4-1 early; but the Cardinals were unable to get off another attempt after
Sean Ellis saved Wilmar Aguilar's attempt 17:55 into the contest.
Campbell out-shot UIW (0-1) 17-0 in the second half and finished with a 24-4 edge overall. CU took 11 corner kicks to just four by UIW (6-1 after intermission).
"I liked our focus for the first match and willingness to start the game with the right energy," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "That energy we spent in first half allowed us to have great success in the second as we wore them down over time."
Making his first start in a Camel uniform, Ellis – a junior transfer from Dayton – made one save for his first career shutout.
Amiche nearly put the Camels in front in the 36th minute when his attempt beat UIW keeper Bryan Castaneda, but not the cross bar. CU held a 7-4 edge in shots after a scoreless first half.
Young's goal proved to be the winner for the Camels, who were picked to repeat as Big South champions and were ranked No. 22 in the Top Drawer and No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason polls. The Camels improved to 14-0-1 all-time when Young – the preseason Big South offensive player of the year – has at least one goal or assist.
Mensah set up Young's opening goal with a pass that split the defense to set up the red-shirt junior's first strike of the season.
Seconds after the restart whistle, Amiche dribbled through a double team at the top of the 18-yard box, to break in 1-v-1 against the keeper and slotted it home.
With just over 12 minutes remaining Broussard finished a scramble in the box on assists from
Angel Bacho and
Bissafi Dotte.
